Searches
can be made back to July 1837 of the General Register
Office indexes. If an entry is found in the index a certified
copy of the register entry can be obtained for you. It
is important to note that the indexes, which are alphabetical
lists from each quarter year, contain only the name of
the person whose event is being registered, together with
the Registration District and GRO reference number.
The registers are not public records and are not available
to be viewed by the general public. The only way to obtain
the information from the registers is to obtain a certified
copy of the required entry. The British Government on
1 July 1837 established this Civil Registration system
of recording all Births, Deaths and Marriages. Every three
months the local Superintendent Registrars transmit a
copy of each Birth, Death and Marriage in their District
to the General Register Office.
Please Contact us if you would

on a daily basis.

The
British Government took a number of Census Returns prior
to 1841 with the information generally containing just
statistics.
The 1841 Census Return is the first to be of value with
Family History research as it contained individual names
and some details of the persons inhabiting each building.
Since then a Census of the population has been taken
every ten years, with some increase in the information
contained.
So, from 1851 onward, this increased information has
made the Census Returns an invaluable source, becoming
available for public search after 100 years. The most
current Census available for public search is 1901.
The information on most Census returns will include:
Name
Marital status
Age
Occupation
Birthplace
Relationship to head of household

Prior
to July 1837 and the start of civil registration, parish
registers were the principle source of records for Baptisms,
Burials and Marriages. It is often possible to trace
several generations of a family within the same Parish.
However it becomes less reliable prior to the 1700's.
The type of information found on Parish records is
- BAPTISMS
1) Name of Child, 2) Date of baptism
(and sometimes date of birth) 3) Name of Parents
- MARRIAGES
1) Name of bride and groom 2) Date of
Marriage 3) Name of Father (earlier records
often omit this information)
- BURIALS
1) Name of deceased 2) Date of burial
3) Age of deceased (if provided)
Additional information is sometimes provided, depending
upon the diligence of the clerk who kept the record.
Several generations can often be traced from Parish
records.
